REFLECTIONS / LIFE

A Day by the Sea

Andrew Yuan · Reflections

Something to eat. A view to enjoy.
Sometimes, that is enough of a plan.

If the weather is good, head for the sea.
When we feel like stopping, stop and paddle for a while.

A rocky coast beneath a clear blue sky, with waves breaking against the rocks.

I like days that begin this way. We take our time, stay a little longer wherever we like, and talk about whatever comes to mind.

The sea was blue, the sky wide open. Standing by the water, watching one wave follow another, I felt myself relax a little.

Two people in clogs and flip-flops stand on wet sand as a wave recedes.

Looking through the photos afterwards, I found more than sea views: a pair of heels left in the car, and a little sand we had brought back with us.

They take me straight back to that day by the water.

A pair of heels left in the car, with sand on a sole and the floor mat.

There are many people I’ve been meaning to thank.

The people who have stayed beside me, those who offered a hand when I needed one, and those who checked in or kept me in their thoughts. I remember those gestures, even when I did not quite manage to say thank you at the time.

Lately, I have come to appreciate these ordinary moments more.

Sharing a meal, having a chat, or deciding at the last minute to go somewhere just for the view. They are warm moments to look back on.

Some things may still have no complete answer. But standing by the sea that day, feeling the breeze and talking with the person beside me, I thought: I’m glad we came.

I do not have to work everything out before going out for a while.

Little by little, I feel like enjoying the sunshine again, paddling in the water, and noticing the company I have along the way.

Thank you to everyone who has been beside me or helped me along.

I would like to spend more days out with the people around me. Sometimes, as we did this time, with very little planned—just deciding to go and see the sea.
